Fraser Island, Australia
One of my favourite things to do when travelling is heading to a viewpoint to watch the sunset. For the entirety of my trip, I went out to marvel at the phenomenon every chance I had and it never got old. Time appears to slow down during this period and all the stress from the day seem to vanish. You can’t help but to feel inspired and grateful for the beauty that this world has to offer. All this and the admission is free!
Labuan Bajo, Flores, Indonesia
Would you believe me if I told you that the best place to enjoy the sunset on this Indonesian island is at a hostel? For only $10/night, you not only get a bed for the night at the Ciao Hostel, but also these spectacular views from its rooftop terrace.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
A 5 minute cable car ride or in my case, a 45 minute hike to the peak of Mount Srd offers unparalleled views of not only the beautiful old town below, but also of the sun fading behind the surrounding islands and the Adriatic Sea.
Fraser Island, Australia
Appropriately named the Sunset Bar, you can enjoy a cold beverage right by the beach as the golden medallion in the sky wanes through the cotton-candy clouds.
Budapest, Hungary
A brief hike up Gellert Hill to the Citadella at dawn provides a stunning contrast of colours that include pink hues of the skies and the lush green forest leading to the vibrant neighbourhoods separated by the Danube River below.
Zadar, Croatia
It’s not hard to see why famed director Alfred Hitchcock declared that Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world. As daylight diminishes, pretty much the entire town heads over to the Oceanside promenade to enjoy the phenomenon. There’s absolutely nothing obstructing the view as the bright orange and magenta celestial fireball descends below the still waters of the Adriatic.
Kotor, Montenegro
A short walk up to the hilltop Castle of San Giovanni presents gorgeous sights of the Sun setting behind the most southerly fjord in Europe. Unfortunately, the day I brought my camera with me, the clouds completely blocked all traces of the star.
Grampians National Park, Australia
A three hour drive from Melbourne, Grampians National Park is home to a number of great hikes and lookout points. The star attraction at the end of the day is located at the Balconies where you can enjoy an extensive view of the flourishing green flora and soaring sandstone mountains as the sun fades in the distance.
