After writing about the world’s best sunsets a few weeks back which you can read here, I thought it would fitting to reveal the most beautiful places at night that I came across during my travels. Paris is undoubtedly the city of lights, but here are seven other destinations that illuminate the skies in a stunning fashion.
Hong Kong
With one of the highest concentration of skyscrapers in the world, Hong Kong boasts a spectacular skyline. This is best viewed from either the top of Victoria Peak or from the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade where a nightly light show illuminates a number of the major structures across the harbour in a harmonious fashion. Don’t miss taking the famed Star Ferry across the harbour for a more intimate view of the skyline. It’s a chance to ride on vessels that have been in service since the 18th century for less than 50 cents!
Sydney, Australia
A stroll along Sydney Harbour after dark offers remarkable views of its most famous attractions gleaming in the night. For a unique experience, opt to take part in the Vivid Climb where you ascend to the summit of the Harbour Bridge to not only enjoy panoramic views of the Opera House and waterfront, but groove on the 70’s inspired illuminated dance floor at the top of the structure!
Tokyo, Japan
Tokyo is often known for the neon lights that brighten up the neighbourhoods of Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Akihabara, but one of the best views after dawn in the capital is from the Odaiba waterfront. Looking out from the beach, you can see the famous Rainbow Bridge sparkle across Tokyo Bay. Although the bridge was named to describe its resemblance to the shape of a rainbow rather than its range of colours, if you happen to be in Tokyo in December, the structure lights up brilliantly with the seven main components of the spectrum.
For an added bonus, Keyakizaka-dori Street in Roppongi Hills turn into an enchanting winter wonderland during the same month. All the trees that line the streets glimmer with Christmas lights as the Tokyo Tower shines in the backdrop.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
As the sun sets, take in the view of the Petronas Towers that brighten up the skies from KLCC Park situated across the soaring twin structures. Every evening, a dancing fountains show located at Lake Symphony play a choreographed performance of sound, water, and light as the Towers dazzle in the background.
Seoul, South Korea
Set next to the striking Dongdaemun Design Plaza sits the shimmering Rose Garden. Made up of over twenty-five thousand LED roses, the garden emits a soothing white glow within the sprawling concrete jungle of Seoul.
Hoi An, Vietnam
Hoi An is arguably one of the prettiest towns in Southeast Asia, but if you happen to be there during the Lantern Festival that occurs during every full moon, you’re in for a treat. For one night each month, electricity is shut down and the ancient town is solely illuminated by lanterns that fill the streets and calmly float along the river.
Brussels, Belgium
At the heart of the city centre of Brussels, lies its most important square, the Grote Markt. Surrounded by gothic and baroque buildings built between the 14th and 17th centuries including the Town Hall, the stunning features of each of these structures are accentuated at night when bright lights shimmer across their facades.
